Regarding the exam, would you say that our past exams are good sources for study material? Also I was wondering what a benchmark test is?

Anyways thank you for a wonderful year and hopefully we can keep in touch :)

Have a happy Friday the 13th and a wonderful summer!

I was wondering since paypal is doing so well especially worldwide, why hasnt there been any real competition for it? I feel like we would at least see especially in other countries some form of imitation.
Also does KM system stand for Knowledge Management System?

Thank you,

I learned a lot about Excel today. I was unaware how to make charts using Excel and now that I have learned it, I can use it a lot in the business world. Excel has so many different features though which makes it hard to remember everything but these class sessions have really been helpful. The homework however is slightly hard for me but I will do my best for the one do Monday.

After we went over the assignment in Excel, you did some extra little things. The one that I was wondering about was the RAND. What does that stand for? Does it really just mean like Random? If so how does a computer pick random numbers, it seems like a rather strange application to have in Excel.

Artificial Intelligence is a very interesting subject but your slides mentioned that it is very far off still from being perfected. I agree with this statement but do you think we will ever reach an age that humanoid robots live and work in our houses? Or is that just things in movies?

You mentioned again in this class about the Microsoft Tuesday fix day thing... Why is it Tuesday? Is there an actual reason behind this date? Does any other computer software companies have this sort of day?
Thanks,

Why is our speed so low compared to other country's internet speed? Is it because we have more people on the internet in the U.S.? Also I find it really strange the words like sniffers in IT speak, who comes up with these odd words? Is it like coined from a group or does someone discover it and name it?

Thanks,
Courtney

This was the day of our exam. I was very pleased with how I did but I had a question. I thought a cookie was a track file put on your hard drive, does a text file put on your hard drive track you? Also what does bandwidth measure? I know it doesn't measure packets but I was wondering what it meant.

What is the difference between CAM and CAD?
Also would you say in today's technology based world that marketing through the internet, which is free, is the most profitable option for a company? If so then why is it taking so many companies to update to internet advertising?

I was a little confused when looking back over the slides and I know you mentioned it in class but I seemed to not have written it down in my notes, the difference between E-business and E-commerce is that E-commerce is a part of E-business?
Also I was interested in finding out which makes more money for the company, cross-selling or up-selling?

Why would someone spend more money for a coaxial cable versus a twisted pair wire when one costs more but both can be tapped? It seems like a frivilous spend... If someone really wanted security, wouldn't they just buy a fiber-optic cable?

I was highly interested in the Internet2. I did a presentation about it at my old university where we were on the Internet2 at USF. Is Chapman University on the Internet2? Do you have to pay though if you are a university to join the internet2?

The exam was relatively difficult with all of these essays and very specific language that can fool you on the True and False questions. I was so upset since I was studying last night and was trying to go over everything but there was just too much stuff for me to put on a studying guide and so I left out the object definition… ugh I felt horrible for not writing it down! Anyways I think I did relatively well despite the huge amount of information that was gone over.

Going over Access again was really helpful and it was great for reminding me what I did last time and all the necessary steps to get everything done. Also it was great to know how to make a report and form. Those can be really helpful for a business. Overall, Access is a great system to know!

This class was extremely interesting and helpful for business. I have gone over this once in a previous class but the way you went over it was so much better. It is a rather hard concept to learn since there are so many different things to remember but overall I am extremely happy with learning and how you taught Access.

Chapt 5 Sec 2

In class we discussed managing data resources. It was interesting to look at the different data systems but I was wondering even though we don't need to know what is a duplication and a replication system? and how are they different. I also thought it was important to note data redundancy but I feel that would be one of the hardest problem to manage… It is one of the important things to note when looking at problems in systems.

I really appreciate you taking more time to go over the chapter during class time. It helps to just have a little more time processing the information flying by even with having read the book.
With Database structures (hierarchal, network, and relational), which one would you say is the best to use? I mean I know that each have a characteristics that makes one better than the other  but in a organization setting would relational be the best?

Thank you,

Tuesday class

On one of the case studies I was unable to hear what the answer was to one of the questions. "What is the business value of XML to the organizations described in the case?" If you could answer that for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Sometimes it is hard for me to hear in the back but that's what I get for coming to class right on time...
Also I was curious, out of all the internet access links such as firefox, safari, internet explorer, etc., which onw would you say is the best? I had a IT professor once tell me that firefox is horrible...

Thank you,

In class today, I was surprised to find out that those kids who found a way to access the information for our Financial Aide were able to do it so easily and even almost by mistake. Does this mean that all of our information given out to corporations who use computers is completely unsafe?

Btw, I remember  you asking me about my tech news report. The one about the pictures that blind people can see.
Here is the link,  if you are still interested.

Class on Tuesday was the exam. I thought I was prepared for the exam but there was definitely some parts that I should have been better prepared for. The TLAs I had huge difficulty with despite writing them like 10 times but that's how it goes.
The ones question though that I got wrong and I needed some help figuring out why was the question, "If Walmart develops a system that connects with Proctor and Gamble to automate inventory functions to lower Walmart's expenses, what strategy are they implementing?"
I put that this was Cost Leadership.
The reason that I chose cost leadership was because in the power point notes I remember there being a point about if a company works with its subsidiary to help lower prices than that makes it Cost Leadership.

This being said, I know why it can also be Alliance. Is there anyway, you can clear up my misunderstanding?

Thank you,
Courtney

Class was very helpful for knowing what to expect on the exam, which will help me to prepare efficiently for it on Tuesday. I'm mostly worried about remembering all of the TLAs. There are just so many and it will definitely take some time to memorize all of them. I will feel like a regular computer geek by the end of this class.

I was wondering though its been awhile since I have seen a floppy disk, are they still even used?

Class was rather tedious today but still full of vital information. I really enjoyed the show and tell of the motherboard since I have never seen one.
One of the things that I cant stand though is how many freakin acronyms there are! It is like a whole other language that I have to learn. The information is very helpful and important though for helping me understand computer speak.

2/10/2011 chapter 2 lecture

2/10/2011 Chapter 2 lecture

Today, class was full of an abundance of information, a little overwhelming actually...
One of the points though that I have heard a lot about in my time of studying business is the competitive strategies but one that I had not yet heard of was the alliance strategy. This strategy is interesting because I didnt realise the significance of alliances in competitor strategies so I thought that was important to learn. Also I thought the percentage on BPR was important to know since like the professor had mentioned in class, BPR only works with its employees 10% of the time. The way to get that 10% is to explain security for the employees and make them feel more comfortable with the transition into a more efficent company environment.
This class was a little too overwhelming but I did take a lot a way from it.
So thank you :)
